This video shows the People's Architecture Office repurposed rundown home in one of Beijing's historic hutong neighbourhoods, using prefabricated panels to create a contemporary and light-filled residence. The Beijing studio overhauled and extended the residence in the Changchun Jie Hutong neighbourhood using a series of white panels. The client Mrs Fan had lived in the house as a child until her parents moved to an apartment block in the suburbs. Mrs Fan wanted to move closer to her job in the city, but struggling to find affordable modern accommodation she asked People's Architecture Office to overhaul her childhood home with its Plugin panels. The team developed the panels as an affordable and temporary way to update living spaces within the ageing structures of the city's hutong dis...

http://www.iguzzini.com The National Grand Theatre, located in the centre of Beijing, approximately 500 metres away from Tiananmen Square, is a real island of culture in the centre of a lake. The large grey titanium ellipsoidal dome has a width of between 144 and 213 metres and a height of 46 metres, and is divided into two by a curved glass cover. There are three auditoriums inside the building: one is dedicated to opera, one to concerts and one to theatrical events. There are also several exhibition spaces which are open to the public. iGuzzini illuminazione worked with Paul Andreu and the lighting designer Kaoru Mende to create artificial lighting in the public spaces and the foyer. http://www.iguzzini.com
Sustainable infrastructure is thriving in China, as year after year, the country has impressive amounts of new construction. In that heated building climate, it is worth noting that, where sustainability is concerned, older buildings are following suit. One example is the Beijing Kerry Centre, a 20-year-old structure that is strategically located in the heart of China’s sprawling capital city. Developed by Kerry Properties in collaboration with its consulting partner, CBRE, Kerry Centre became the first mixed-use existing building in Asia Pacific to earn LEED Platinum certification.

MAD Architects are responsible for designing the Chaoyang Park Plaza, which will be situated in Beijing. Made to resemble mountains, the plaza is supposed to represent an element of nature. The Chinese is one of the worlds oldest civilizations. The capital, Beijing with its 11 million inhabitants is now a modern city with skyscrapers, highways and shopping malls. Its several ancient monuments are all oases of silence. The Tien’anmen square is possibly the largest and most famous square of the world. The former imperial palace, surrounded by wall was called ‘the forbidden city’ because a commoner could not enter here. At least that beautiful is the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven, where pieces from the ancient artist await the visitors. When in Beijing, one must not forget the Buddhist temples, and the zoo, where the very rare panda bears are living. Let us not forget about the gastronomical part of China, since the country’s cuisine is one of the best on Earth. From Be...

For almost 500 years The Forbidden City (also called the Palace Museum on some maps) served as the home of China's emperors and their households. No one else was allowed inside. Of course, that's not the case any longer as droves of tourists walk the grounds today. Bring your walking shoes because the palace covers 720,000 m2 (7,800,000 sq ft) - or about 180 acres. www.LaurenInAsia.com www.LaurenBercarich.com Lauren Bercarich
